Fall colors at our old place

Walking past our old apartment at 1940 Commonwealth Ave, I reminisce and revel in the beauty of nature and old memories.

What is my room missing? Assignment 7/8

A headboard! And I want to design one for our bedroom.

DIY headboard

On Pinterest I discovered this tutorial to DIY a rustic, wooden headboard by Echoes of Laughter. I can customize and design to fit our king size bed (humble brag). We already have a frame, just nothing decent looking to add interest and style to the bed.

Style Cure 2014

Last weekend I combined Assignment 4 and Assignment 7.

I created an outbox in the foyer/hall going into our bedroom, and cleaned the entire room. I noticed I really need storage for books (or a new home for them) and jewelry storage, as it all sits in boxes right now.

Floor Plan, Assignment 5:

Would love to add a vanity for jewelry, etc. storage. The long wall across from the bed I want to add some shelfs for art, place to hang things. Need somewhere to put all the books, if not in the bedroom, someplace else? The bottom left I am dumfounded as to what should go there, very awkward, but need access to under stair storage. I think keeping things simple is my best chance for success, so I don't plan to go overboard with rugs, art, projects.

Color Confidence, Assignment 6
Having read the article, I'm going to stick to warm colors. I learned black is a warm color, need some black, neutrals, maybe some gold and vibrant artwork for pop of color. Maybe some fun pillows also.

Assignment #2: Go on a style scouting

I love this assignment, gathering some data (pics) of my style. I began a new board to pin some ideas of what I am going for, Style Cure 2014.

Inspiration Photo 1

And I have decided to cure my bedroom, so this photo inspires my design: We have the wooden beams, and I love the dark walls, with wooden/rustic details.

Inspiration Photo 2

I love the hanging caged lamps with exposed bulbs, want to DIY one for cheap if possible?
Inspiration Photo 3
Finally, this photo has the glamour/gold details I love and want to incorporate somehow. Love the luxurious bedding, slightly messy (let's be for real, I never make my bed).

Baby pictures

E. coli NEB-5a strain transformed with my newly-ligated 36-LIB-GFP library.

I'm developing what's called a mutant library, based on one of the RNA sequences that survived my SELEX experiment. Preliminary reporter experiments with this RNA, 36 (yet to be given a name), may regulate gene expression in response to ribosomal protein S15 (from G. kaustophilus species). I mutated the RNA sequence and now need to screen my mutants to find which sequences actually DO regulate gene expression using a GFP reporter.

Join the Style Cure 2014 with me, hosted by Apartment Therapy! I only recently discovered this, so I'm playing catch-up; however, I like the idea of bite-size chunks and focusing on small parts of the condo-design process. I find decorating and overall design to be a daunting endeavor, very left-brained that I am. I practice critical thinking, data analysis, and analyzing complex biochemical processes daily, but that leaves little time for study of the color wheel, furniture placement, and organization when they both directly affect my daily life. To alleviate this imbalance, I choose to spare a couple hours each weekend to make one room in our new condo more complete.

The first task involves data generation followed by data analysis, both of which I am practiced and good at. Yay, we are starting off on the right foot! I must first fill out the Style Cure Interview and use my answers to better understand my design esthetic. In a breach from my "normal" day-to-day, for the data entered on this questionnaire there are no wrong answers, total bonus! Here we go:

The Style Cure

Interview/Data generation

1. List your favorites in each category:
Actor: Johnny Depp
Actress: Meryl Streep
Artist: Alfred Gockel, Vincent Van Gogh
Writer: George R. R. Martin
Music: John Williams, Guns 'N Roses (not Chinese Democracy), Nicki Minaj
Restaurant: Chart House, Boston waterfront
Automobile: none? spaceship
Movie or Television Show: Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, True Detective
Clothing (pieces, designers or stores): Kate Spade
Furniture (pieces, designers or stores): industrial, rustic, vintage, modern

2 Choose three words to describe your personal style:
easy-breezy, industrial-modern, classic

3. Think back over all the homes you’ve lived in, both as a child and an adult. Which rooms would you choose as your favorites and how would you describe them? Favorite room from a childhood home and description:
Favorite room from an adult home and description:

my favorite is my own living room right now in Chelsea, MA...loft style with high ceilings, wooden beams on the ceiling and huge windows. Lots of amazing architectural details and simple, functional/comfortable, yet classic furniture

4. Whom do you consider a role model? What three adjectives describe the qualities that you admire in this person?
My mom, a strong, loving, independent, passionate, just, caring woman

5. Every home has areas that are “just right”. Which three spots or things in your
home do you feel are beautiful and feel proud of, right now, as is:
-The layout of the living room with our new black, leather couch
-the board game wall
-the master bedroom closet

6. A month from now, at the end of the Style Cure, how would you like your friends to describe your home?
I want to "cure" our bedroom and make it look as interesting and inviting as our loft-style, industrial living area.

Data analysis:
1. Do my answers to Questions 1 & 2 have any connections?
In addition to my Q2 answers, upon analyzing my Q1 answers I would add one additional idea/item. The Doctor Who and spaceship answers, in addition to the Alfred Gockel paintings, made me realize I like unique or interesting accents or artwork.

"Questions 3 and 5 are different ways of connecting with what you find pleasing, comfortable and beautiful."

"Questions 4 and 6 are both about your aspirations and therefore can help to form a direction and goals for your Cure in terms of what you want your room makeover to provide to your homelife."
